Overview

Provision of support services to Batswana abroad who are in distress. This includes facilitating contact with their families and friends. 

Who is eligible?
  • Citizens of Botswana.
  • Foreign national with permanent residency (under special circumstances).
  • Foreign nationals with valid work permit (under special circumstances).
How do I get this service?
  • Contact the nearest Botswana Embassy, High Commission or Honorary Consul and request to speak with the Consular Officer.
  • Explain your situation and give contact details of family or friends.
  • In a case where Botswana does not have an Embassy or High Commission in that country the Office of the Honorary Consul of Botswana in that region may be approached to assist.
What supporting documents are required?
  • National Identification card (Omang)
  • Permanent Residency permit
  • Valid Work permit
  • Valid passport
How long will this service take?

Immediate but dependent on proximity of the nearest Botswana Mission.

How much does it cost?

The cost is dependent on the situation:

  • In-service trainees and students will be transported at the cost of Government.
  • In rescue situations, where flights are possible, nationals will need to arrange for relatives and friends to provide air fares.

Extension of days of visit

Overview

Foreign nationals are allowed to stay in Botswana for a period of 90 days without applying for a residence or work permit. If visitors want to stay in Botswana for longer than 90 days, they will have to apply for an extension to stay beyond the validity period.

Who is eligible?

Visitors who have exhausted their 90 days period of visit in Botswana and wish to extend their stay qualify for this service.

How do I get this service?

In order to access this service, applicants must complete the following steps.

  • Justification letter requesting for extension of days
  • You will be issued with an Extension of days sticker if your application is successful
  • You will be required to leave the country if your application has been rejected.
What supporting documents are required?
  • Letter of support from host in Botswana.
  • Covering letter from the applicant indicating the reasons for extension of days.
  • One coloured passport size photo.
  • Certified copy of valid applicant’s passport information page.
  • Two certified copies of valid passport pages showing movement (stamps of entering countries).
  • Certified copy of Host’s Residence or Exemption Certificate Permit or Certified copies of valid national identity card (Omang).
How long will this service take?

The service takes three days to complete. The applicant should submit this application before the 90 days period lapses.

  2. Submit payment (listed below) along with the application form.
  3. In the case of parent(s) or guardian(s) applying for an e-passport for persons aged 16 years or younger, bring the child to the office when submitting the application.
  4. Check the outcome of your application from the Office in which the application was made within 24 hours.
What supporting documents are required?

For persons aged 16 years and above:

  1. Original Omang Card and one certified copy of Omang.
  2. Citizenship certificate of parents and/or applicant if parents were once foreign nationals (seek Clarification from Passport and Citizen Officers).
  3. Omang details for parent(s) as well as details of parent's place of birth.
  4. Old passport (physical copy) or for lost passport please bring the police report or affidavit before the commissioner of oath. The forms are collected by the applicant or parent if under 16 years of age.

For children under 16 years of age:

  1. Original birth certificate and one certified copy of birth certificate.
  2. Original Omang Card of parent(s).
  3. Guardian’s original Omang Card (in case of deceased or missing parents).
  4. Death certificate(s) of deceased parent(s) if applicable.
  5. Letter from District Commissioner, Chief or Social Worker for proof of guardianship in the case of guardian(s) applying for the child’s e-passport.
  6. Old passport of child.

Botswana Passport Application

Overview

All Botswana citizens are required to have Botswana passport to travel abroad.

How do I get this service?

In order to access this service, applicants must complete the following steps;

  1. Fill and submit the Passport Application Form at any immigration office countrywide or Nearest Botswana Embassies abroad(contact information provided below).
  2. Submit payment (listed below) along with the application form.
  3. All applicants are required to present themselves in person for passport application. Minors (17 years and younger) should be accompanied by their parent(s) or guardian(s).   
  4. Check the outcome of your application from the Office in which the application was made.

 

What supporting documents are required?

First application 

For persons aged eighteen  (18) years and above:
1.    Provide a valid National Identification Card (Omang) and a copy.
2.    Pay BWP260.00 application fee.

Minors (0-17 Yrs.) applicant are required to:
1.    Provide original Birth Certificate and a copy, for 16 and 17 year old applicants provide Original Id and copy in addition
2.    Provide valid National Identity Card of the applicant’s parent or legal guardian and a copy.
3.    Pay BWP 100.00 application fee for 0-15 yrs. old applicants
4.    16 to 17 yrs. old applicant are required to pay BWP 260.00.

REPLACEMENT OF PASSPORT
Adult applicants are required to;
1.    Provide valid National Identification Card (Omang) and a copy.
2.    Surrender expired and/or full passport.
3.    Pay BWP 260.00 application fee.

Minors (0-17 Yrs.) applicants are required to:
1.    Provide a Birth Certificate and copy,for 16 and 17 year old applicants provide Original Id and copy in addition

2.    Provide a valid national Identity Card of the applicant’s parent or legal guardian copy. 

  • letter from District Commissioner, kgosi or Social Worker  
  • death certificate (s) of deceased parents(s) if applicable

    3. Citizenship Certificate of parents and /or applicant if parents were once foreign nationals

  • 4.    Surrender expired and/or full passport.
     

Note:  lost, stolen, and burnt passports that are still valid are subjected to 12 months waiting period from the date of reporting (police report/abstract/affidavit). 
 

Application for a 12-month period waiver

A waiver is required in case you cannot wait for 12 months. Requirements are as follows:

  1. Application letter for the need for a waiver 
  2. Supporting documents (e.g medical, educational reasons)
  3. Police statement (Affidavit) 
  4. Copy of ID  
     
How long will this service take?
  • The passport takes five (5) working days to process (if applied outside Gaborone).
  • The passport takes three (3) days (if applied  within Gaborone).
  • The application for the waiver is five (5) days
