Permanent Residence Application

Overview

This service provides applicants with an opportunity to be granted permanent residence status.

Who is eligible?

Non-citizens who meet the following criteria are eligible for this service.

  • Resided lawfully in Botswana continuously for at least 5 years
  • Be of good character
  • Have made significant contributions to Botswana
  • Be of good standing in the society
  • Have enough means to support oneself and dependents
How do I get this service?

In order to access this service, applicants must complete the following steps.

  • Go to any Immigration and Citizenship Office
  • Complete Form 21
  • Submit required documents (listed below), fees and completed form to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (address provided below)
  • Applicants are also allowed to track the application via phone
  • A letter will be sent by post
  • Come and collect your Permanent Certificate from the office where an application was made
What supporting documents are required?

Requirements Applicable to All

  • Covering letter from the applicant
  • Two copies of valid certified passport
  • Two recent coloured passport size photos per applicant
  • Certified marriage certificate if applicable

 

For immigrants/dependents/missionaries

  • Letter of support from supporter/spouse/mission
  • Proof of means of support in Botswana
  • Most recent month’s bank statement

 

Employees

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Certified educational certificates of the highest level of education obtained
  • Reference letter from employer
  • Letter of job offer from employer

 

Investors

  • Wages sheet of employees which indicates the duration of employment of   employees
  • Certified copies of identity cards for citizen employees
  • Submit valid and certified copies of the following:
  1. Valuation of shares.
  2. Share certificate.
  3. Certificate of incorporation.
  4. Form 2 - List of directors.
  5. Current year’s financial statements.
  6. Title deed/lease agreement of business premise(s).
  7. Trading license.
  8. Most recent year’s tax return.
How long will this service take?

This service takes six months.

National Identity Card Application

Overview

This service registers citizens aged 16 years and above and issues them with a National Identity Document (Omang). The Omang Card is used as a form of identity and for accessing services.

Who is eligible?

All citizens of Botswana who are 16 years and above are eligible for this service.

How do I get this service?

In order to access this service, applicants must complete the following steps:

  • For applicants applying for an Omang Card for the first time, complete and submit the Application for Registration (1st Schedule).
  • For applicants applying for an Omang Card due to loss, renewal, theft, damage or change of surname, complete and submit the Application for Replacement.
  • Along with the application form, submit the required documents (listed below) and provide finger prints. At the time of submission, a receipt will be issued to the applicant.
  • The form is then forwarded to a centralized production center for processing. Upon successful processing, an Identity is issued for collection by the client.
  • A receipt of submission is required when collecting the Identity Card.
  • New applications done after 30 days of the applicant’s sixteenth birthday or acquiring citizenship are referred to as late registration. Applicants will be referred to the Botswana Police Service for cautioning and fining before collecting the Identity.

  • Where Identity Card is registered within the prescribed time (30 days after attaining 16 years of age or acquiring citizenship), an Identity card is issued for free.
  • Any registration done after that period attracts a fine not exceeding BWP500.00
  • A fee of BWP5.00 is payable for renewals, change of surname, and damaged Identity. A fee of BWP110.00 is payable for lost and stolen Identity Card.

Change of Name

Overview

This service allows citizens of Botswana to change their official name, as registered in the Civil and National Registry.

Who is eligible?

All citizens of Botswana.

How do I get this service?

In order to access this service, applicants must complete the following steps.

  • Complete and submit Application for Change of Name (with relevant support documents) to the Department of Civil and National Registration.
  • The application will be processed and publicised in the Government Gazette for 30 days to accommodate possible objections.
  • If there are no objections, an authorisation is publicised for 14 days in the Government Gazette to inform members of the proposed change.
  •  If there is no objection to the authorisation, an authorisation letter is issued to the client.
What supporting documents are required?

Certified copies of the following documents should accompany the application form when applying for this service.

Change of Name due to marriage

  • Marriage Certificate or certificate from customary authorities in the case of a customary marriage (on the marriage of applicant’s parents).

Change of Name due to any other reasons

  • Birth Certificate or Affidavit of Birth.
  • School Academic Certificates.
  • Omang Card.
  • Page 1 and 2 of passport.
  • Any other legal documents.
How long will this service take?
  • Change of name due to marriage is processed same day
  • Change of name due to any other reason takes 69 days to complete.

Extension of days of visit

Overview

Foreign nationals are allowed to stay in Botswana for a period of 90 days without applying for a residence or work permit. If visitors want to stay in Botswana for longer than 90 days, they will have to apply for an extension to stay beyond the validity period.

Who is eligible?

Visitors who have exhausted their 90 days period of visit in Botswana and wish to extend their stay qualify for this service.

How do I get this service?

In order to access this service, applicants must complete the following steps.

  • Justification letter requesting for extension of days
  • You will be issued with an Extension of days sticker if your application is successful
  • You will be required to leave the country if your application has been rejected.
What supporting documents are required?
  • Letter of support from host in Botswana.
  • Covering letter from the applicant indicating the reasons for extension of days.
  • One coloured passport size photo.
  • Certified copy of valid applicant’s passport information page.
  • Two certified copies of valid passport pages showing movement (stamps of entering countries).
  • Certified copy of Host’s Residence or Exemption Certificate Permit or Certified copies of valid national identity card (Omang).
How long will this service take?

The service takes three days to complete. The applicant should submit this application before the 90 days period lapses.

Requirements for Labour Exemption Certificates for Permanent Residents

Overview

The exemption certificate is issued to applicants who hold a Permanent Residence Permit.Only Directors are eligible to apply for this Labour Exemption Certificate to work or operate a business in Botswana.

How do I get this service?

 Fill and submit the following forms depending on type of applicant:

  1. Two copies of Form 4 for employees
  2. Two copies of Form 4, Form II/Form 8, Form 13 and Form 14 for directors
  3. Form 3A, Form 15, and Form 21 for all applicants
  4. Submit payment and application forms to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (address provided below).Check the outcome of your application from the Office which the application was made after 6 Months.
What supporting documents are required?

Requirements applicable to all persons:

  1. Covering letter from the applicant
  2. Two copies of certified passport
  3. Two recent passport size photos
  4. If married, include one copy of certified marriage certificate

 

Immigrants/dependents/missionaries

  1. Letter of support from sponsor, spouse, supporter, or mission
  2. Proof of means of support in Botswana
  3. Most recent month’s bank statement

Electronic Emergency Travel Document (ETD)

Overview

An Emergency Travel Document is a document issued to people who need to travel within a short period of time on emergency basis to neighbouring countries except South Africa.

Who is eligible?

All citizens of Botswana are eligible for this service.

How do I get this service?

In order to access this service, applicants must complete the following steps:

  1. Fill and submit the Application for Passport Form to any immigration office countrywide (contact information provided below).
  2. Submit payment (listed below) along with the application form.
  3. In the case of parent(s) or guardian(s) applying for an e-passport for persons aged 16 years or younger, bring the child to the office when submitting the application.
  4. Check the outcome of your application from the Office in which the application was made within 24 hours.
What supporting documents are required?

For persons aged 16 years and above:

  1. Original Omang Card and one certified copy of Omang.
  2. Citizenship certificate of parents and/or applicant if parents were once foreign nationals (seek Clarification from Passport and Citizen Officers).
  3. Omang details for parent(s) as well as details of parent's place of birth.
  4. Old passport (physical copy) or for lost passport please bring the police report or affidavit before the commissioner of oath. The forms are collected by the applicant or parent if under 16 years of age.

For children under 16 years of age:

  1. Original birth certificate and one certified copy of birth certificate.
  2. Original Omang Card of parent(s).
  3. Guardian’s original Omang Card (in case of deceased or missing parents).
  4. Death certificate(s) of deceased parent(s) if applicable.
  5. Letter from District Commissioner, Chief or Social Worker for proof of guardianship in the case of guardian(s) applying for the child’s e-passport.
  6. Old passport of child.
  7. Citizenship certificate of parents and/or owner (registration) if parents were once foreign nationals (seek clarification from Passport and Citizen Officers).
