Citizenship Application – Naturalization of Foreign Spouse

Overview

An individual who meet the requirements for naturalization as a foreign spouse can apply for a Certificate of Naturalization and become a Botswana citizen.

Who is eligible?

All foreigners who are married to citizens of Botswana and have resided in Botswana for a period of at least five years.

How do I get this service?

In order to access this service, applicants must complete the following steps.

  1. The applicant must have applied for a declaration of intention to make an application for a certificate of naturalization (spouse of a citizen)-form K.
  2.  Complete and Submit Form N “Certificate of Naturalization by Foreign Spouse)” along with required documents and fees listed below.
  3. After the application is received, you will be publicized in the Government Gazzette to give those who are against your citizenship application to voice out their concerns.
  4.  The office will send you a letter via post inviting you for a citizenship interview.
  5.  If your application is rejected, a rejection letter will be sent to you by mail.
  6.  If your application is successful, letters requesting you to renounce your foreign citizenship will be sent to you by mail.
What supporting documents are required?
  1. Two recent coloured passport size photos.
  2. Form M supplement.
  3. Completed police report form.
  4. Certified copy of valid residence permit.
  5. Certified copy of marriage certificate.
  6. Certified copy of spouse’s valid national identity card (Omang).
  7. Maturity letter.
  8. Certified copy of valid passport.
How long will this service take?

Approximately one year.

Citizenship Application – Dual Citizenship

Overview

Any person who is both a citizen of Botswana and a foreign country will cease to be a citizen of Botswana unless the following measures are taken before the attainment of age twenty one (21):

  • Renounced the citizenship of the foreign country.
  • Taken the oath of allegiance.
  • Made such declaration of intentions concerning residence as may be prescribed.

If the citizen does not renounce the citizenship of the foreign country before the age of twenty one (21), the citizen will cease to be a Botswana citizen. Consequences of a loss of the Botswana citizenship are that one would not qualify for the Botswana passport or the National Identity card (Omang).

Who is eligible?

This service applies to people who are Botswana citizens by birth, descent and registration but are also citizens of other countries, and are under the age of twenty one (21) years.

NB:

  • Born in Botswana or outside Botswana and one of your parents is a citizen of Botswana at the time of your birth.
  • You can also be on dual citizenship if you were born by foreign citizens who later acquired Botswana citizenship and registered you as a citizen of Botswana before attaining the age of twenty one (21).
How do I get this service?

In order to access this service, applicants must follow the following steps:

  • Go to any Immigration office at least three (3) months before turning twenty one (21) to collect a letter as proof of dual citizenship.
  • Submit documents issued by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to the foreign country to renounce the foreign citizenship. Contact the foreign country’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship for requirements in the renunciation process.
  • After renunciation of the foreign citizenship, go to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to submit your application with proof that you have renounced the other citizenship and take oath of allegiance before attaining the age of twenty one (21) finalize the process by submitting below documents and taking the oath of allegiance.
What supporting documents are required?
  • Two passport sized photos.
  • Certificate of Declaration form. The applicant will be given a letter as proof of renunciation from their country of origin
  • Proof that one has renounced the other country's citizenship.
  • Copy of birth certificate
  • Registration Certificate (For children who were born by foreign citizens but later registered as citizens of Botswana).
  • Proof of parent’s citizenship (certified copies of valid Parent national Identity card/s and certified copies of citizenship certificates if they acquired Botswana Citizen).

Citizenship Application – Declaration of Intention

Overview

An applicant who intends to apply for a Certificate of Naturalization as a Foreign Spouse must submit a Declaration of Intention Form as required by the Citizenship Act.

Who is eligible?

The applicant must be a non-citizen married to a Botswana citizen and has resided in Botswana for a minimum of two and a half years.

How do I get this service?

In order to access this service, applicants must complete the following steps.

  •  Complete and Submit Form K “Declaration on Intention to make an Application for a Certificate of Naturalization by a Foreign Spouse” and submit at any Immigration Office along with required documents and fees listed below.
  •  After the application is received, the office will send the Maturity Letter to the applicant through mail.
What supporting documents are required?
  • Two passport size coloured photos.
  • Certified copy of the spouse’s valid national identity card (Omang).
  • Certified copy of valid residence permit.
  • Certified copy of marriage certificate.
How long will this service take?

Approximately one month.

Citizenship Application – Adopted Child

Overview

This application gives Batswana citizens who have adopted children of foreign nationals a chance to register their adopted children as citizens of Botswana.

Who is eligible?
  • The applicant must be a Motswana and must have an adopted child who is over three(3) years old.
  •  The child must be legally adopted and must have a valid residence permit in Botswana.
  •  The adopted child must be registered before the age of twenty one(21) years old.
How do I get this service?

In order to access this service, applicants must complete the following steps.

  • Complete and submit Form C “Application for registration as Citizen of Botswana of Adopted Child over  three(3) years old” to an Immigration Office along with required documents and fees listed below.
  •  After the application is received, the office will send a letter to the applicant to come to Immigration Offices to collect the outcome.
  • Check the outcome of your application through the office where the application was made.
  •  Get your outcome from the Office (A certificate of registration will be issued to you).
What supporting documents are required?
  • Two passport sized photographs.
  • Copy of adoption certificate.
  • Proof of parents' citizenship status e.g.  copy of a valid National Identity card (Omang).
  • Police report forms for children over sixteen(16) years old.
  • Copy of adoptive parents' marriage certificate if parents are married.
  • Copy of a valid residence permit. 
  • All copies should be certified.
How long will this service take?

Approximately one(1) month.

Renunciation Of Citizenship By Reason Of Dual Citizenship Or Nationality

Overview

Citizens of Botswana who wish to renounce their citizenship can submit an official request to the Government to de-register from the national civil registry.

Who is eligible?

All citizens of Botswana who meet the following criteria qualify for the service:

  • Has acquired citizenship of another country
  • Must be over 21 years of age
How do I get this service?

In order to access this service, applicants must follow the following steps:

  • Provide proof of citizenship from another country
  • Complete and submit Form R Declaration of Renunciation/Abandonment of Citizenship of Botswana, required documents (listed below) and BWP 10.00 to any Immigration Office (address provided below)
  • Wait for proof of renunciation letter from Botswana Immigration Offices
  • After receipt of proof of renunciation, surrender Botswana documents (National identity card and Passport to your nearest Immigration Offices or Mission)
What supporting documents are required?
  • Two(2) recent coloured passport size photos
  • Complete a Certificate of Origin form obtained from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship
  • Proof of citizenship from another country
  • Police report from foreign country with the applicant’s finger prints
  • Certified copy of birth certificate or affidavit in lieu of birth certificate
  • Certified copy of parent’s citizenship status

This service takes approximately one (1) month to complete.

Birth Registration

Overview

All births that occur within Botswana regardless of the parents’ nationality have to be registered in the Botswana Civil and National Registry. Once successfully registered, the child will be issued a birth certificate.Next of kin, being mother/father or guardian can collect a birth certificate .

To obtain a duplicate of the birth certificate, someone with legal capacity and a valid national identity card for citizens or Passport for foreign nationals can collect his or her own birth certificate.

All children born in Botswana.

How do I get this service?

In order to access this service, applicants must complete the following steps.

  • Submit the required documents (listed below) to the Department of Civil and National Registration along with the required documents.
  • The clerk will enter the birth into the Birth Register.
  • After signature by the Registrar General, one original birth certificate is presented to the parent(s) or guardian of the child.
What supporting documents are required?

On-time registration of births that occurred in health facilities

  •  Birth Notification form given by hospital personnel at the time of delivery. 
  • Identity document of the parents (valid national identity card (Omang) for citizens, passport for non citizens).

On-time registration of births that occurred outside health institutions

  •  Confirmation letter from Kgosi.
  •  Under 5 medical card.
  •  Statement/ affidavit from the parents or guardian(s).
  •  Certified copy of valid national identity card of the parents or guardian(s).
  •  Statements/ affidavits from two witnesses who know of the birth.
  •  Certified copy of witnesses’ identity documents.

Late registration of births that occurred in health facilities

  •  Confirmation letter from the hospital/maternity clinic.
  •  Under 5 medical card.
  •  Statement/ affidavit from the parents or guardian(s).
  •  Certified copy of national identity card (Omang) of the parents or guardian(s).
  •  Statements/ affidavits from two witnesses who know of the birth.
  •  Certified copy of witnesses’ identity documents.

 Late registration of births that occurred outside health institutions

  •  Confirmation letter from Kgosi.
  •  Extract from school admission record (for those already attending school).
  •  Under 5 medical card.· Statement/ affidavit from the parents or guardian(s).
  • ·Certified copy of national identity card (Omang) of the parents or guardian(s).
  •  Statements/ affidavits from two witnesses who know of the birth.
  •  Certified copy of witnesses’ identity documents.
How long will this service take?

For births registered within 60 days of occurrence, the service will be completed on the same day.

For births registered after 60 days of occurrence, it is considered a late registration and the service will take fourteen days to complete.

How much does it cost?

Births registered within 60 days of their occurrence are processed for free.

Any registration done after that period attracts a levy of BWP5.00 for every month of defaulting, up to a maximum of BWP100.00.
