Issuance of Plant, Plant products Import Permit/Phytosanitary Certificate

Overview

This service allows/enables Importers and Exporters to import/export plant and plant products. The permit is administered through Plant Protection Act CAP35:02.To import/export plants, plant products you must apply for an import permit and a Phytosanitary certificate respectively issued by the Division of Plant Protection. For one to be issued a Phytosanitary certificate s/he must meet the import conditions of the importing country. The import permit is valid for 6 months and can be used for multiple entry. The Phytosanitary certificate is valid for 2 weeks and used for single entry only.

Who is eligible?
  • Individuals (citizens and non-citizens)
  • Registered a company with Registrar of Companies for a Trading License
  • Registered business (Companies/Hawkers/Vendors)
How do I get this service?
  • Interested citizens and businesses are required to visit the nearest District Crop Production Office with relevant supporting documents.
  • Complete an application form to import the plant and plant products
  • Forms can be completed and send via email to MoAPlantPermits [at] gov.bw<
  • Pay the prescribed fee physically or at the District Crop Production Office or electronically at the following banking details:

Seed Testing Application

Overview

The Seed Multiplication Unit in the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food Security is mandated to certify seed lots under the Laws of Botswana and certification is limited to seed of officially recognized varieties, so grown and inspected, to protect varietal identity.

  • Seed companies.
  • Private institutions.
  • Researchers.
  • Individual farmers.
How do I get this service?
  • Fill and Submit the Seed testing submission form along with the seed sample to the seed testing laboratory for testing.
  • The evaluation report will be given.
What supporting documents are required?

No supporting documents. 

How long will this service take?

Fourteen to Twenty-one (14 to 21) working days depending on the influx of samples and the functional status of laboratory equipment.

Request for Genetic Material

Overview

The National Plant Genetic Resources Unit in the Department of Agricultural Research of the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food Security collects and conserves seeds of cultivated crops, their wild relatives and other useful wild plant species. The conserved plant genetic resources provide raw material (traits) for present and future use to improve the quality and productivity of crops. This also serves as a backup for any incidental loss of species due to wild fires, indiscriminate harvesting and harsh environmental conditions. Researchers, famers and academics or anyone interested in acquiring conserved genetic material can make a request for genetic material.

  • Any person interested in acquiring conserved genetic material
  • Researchers and academics
  • Farmers
How do I get this service?
  • Submit letter addressed to the Gene Bank Manager of the National Plant Genetic Resources Centre (NPGRC) of the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food Security making a request for genetic material.
  • If the material is available, a sample is prepared, and the applicant is contacted to collect the sample from NPGRC.
What supporting documents are required?
  • A certified copy of National Identity Card (Omang) for citizens.
  • A certified copy of a Passport.
How long will this service take?

Two to Seven (2-7) working days, depending on the proximity of the applicant to the NPGRC.

Plant Disease Identification

Overview

This service provides applicants with a means by which to identify plant diseases and to receive recommendations on control measures.

Who is eligible?

Any person, citizens or non-citizens interested in crop disease identification and control is welcomed to apply for this service including:

  • Horticulture farmers
  • Arable farmers
  • Researchers
  • Other Institutions
How do I get this service?
  • Complete and submit the  Plant Pests Diagnostic Form along with the sample to Plant Pathology Testing Laboratory for testing.
  • After evaluation of the test results, a report will be dispatched and explained.
What supporting documents are required?

No supporting documents.

How long will this service take?

Fourteen to Twenty-one (14 to 21) working days depending on the purity of samples received.
