In a step towards improving the welfare of its service members, the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) officially took delivery of 408 modern residential housing units this morning at the Sarona Residential Estate in Gaborone. Valued at more than P500 million, the project is designed to enhance the living conditions of BDF personnel, underscoring the nation’s commitment to those who dedicate their lives to defending Botswana’s sovereignty.
The handover ceremony featured the ceremonial presentation of keys, highlighting the government’s investment in the wellbeing of its soldiers. Officiating at the event, the Minister for State Presidency, Defence and Security, Moeti Mohwasa, addressed the gathering with a message of appreciation and dedication.
“Today, we reaffirm our pledge that the welfare of our people shall be the supreme law,” Minister Mohwasa said, echoing the sentiments of President Duma Boko. “BDF personnel continue to serve our country with discipline and loyalty, defending our sovereignty and responding to emergencies under demanding conditions, often separated from their families. It is only fitting that we ensure they are afforded decent living conditions.”
He stressed the importance of housing in boosting morale and institutional strength, adding: “When soldiers are assured that their families are safe, that their living conditions are dignified, and that their service is valued, they are able to perform their duties with greater focus and commitment. Housing is not a secondary consideration; it is the cornerstone of morale and resilience.”
Describing the Sarona Estate, Minister Mohwasa continued: “The 408 modern housing units are a deliberate investment in the effectiveness and resilience of the Botswana Defence Force and, above all, an investment in our people.”
Receiving the symbolic key, BDF Commander General Mpho Mophuting expressed his gratitude to the government, describing the gesture as the finest welfare support the forces could receive.
“The best welfare you can ever give to the troops is accommodation. The second best is health, and the third is training. The rest falls into place because we are easy to please,” General Mophuting remarked with a smile. “This is the first time ever that we have received 408 apartments within a year. I can confidently say that by Christmas, I’ll be smiling because we will have accommodated 500 soldiers. Even though our water utility costs may rise, we are grateful that our soldiers now have a roof over their heads.”
In his closing remarks, Deputy Commander Lieutenant General Joseph Seelo highlighted the government’s unwavering commitment to soldier welfare.
“This project is a symbol of national investment and a testament to our leadership and vision since inception,” Lieutenant General Seelo stated. “It affirms the government’s dedication to the dignity and wellbeing of our soldiers.”
The handover represents a milestone in Botswana’s ongoing efforts to support its military personnel, ensuring they serve with pride and dignity, knowing that their families are cared for and that their living standards remain a priority.
