This service allows individuals to apply for a permit to possess and use a firearm.

Who is eligible?
  • Any person aged 18 years and above
How do I get this service?
  • Complete Form 5 (Application form available online and at all police stations)
  • Both the applicant and firearm owner should be present at the police station
  • The firearm should be presented before the licensing officer 
What supporting documents are required?
  • Valid Identification documents for both owner and the recipient
  •  Firearm Certificate

Application for Permit to Import Ammunition (Resident)

Overview

The service allows legal arms dealers and individuals to import ammunition into Botswana. Note that for individual firearm owners, the quota of 100 rounds of ammunition per year applies.

Who is eligible?
  • Any person who is a legally registered firearm owner
  • Any legally registered arms dealer

What supporting documents are required?
  • Valid National Identification document (Omang)
  •  Non-citizens must present a valid passport and residence permit
  • Tender the original certificate of firearm before Licensing Officer
  • Arms Dealers should tender a valid Arms Dealer's License

Application for Change of Firearm Ownership

Overview

The process involves the transferring of ownership of a firearm from one person to another

Who is eligible?
  • Any person aged 18 years and above
  • The applicant should have no criminal record
How do I get this service?
  • The firearm license owner should write a letter to the Commissioner of Police requesting for permission to transfer ownership
  • In a case of inheritance, all interested parties or individuals must consent in writing to the Commissioner of Police
  • The recipient should also write an acceptance letter
  • Subject to approval, complete Form 1 and Form 11. (Application forms available online and at all police stations)
What supporting documents are required?
  • Valid identification documents
  • In case of inheritance attach copies of relevant documents such as; Arm Licence
    • Marriage certificate (If the recipients is a spouse of the deceased owner)
    • Firearm certificate
  • For first-time firearm ownership, the applicant should provide a police clearance report

Application for permit to acquire firearm (Raffle)

Overview

This service allows an individual to acquire and legally own a firearm. The application process is followed by a raffle draw in which applicants are picked to be winners.

Who is eligible?
  • Any person aged 18 years and above
  • Applicant should have no criminal record
How do I get this service?

Download and complete Application For Permit to Acquire Firearms(Raffle) form (Application forms are also available at all Police Stations).

What supporting documents are required?
  • Valid National Identification document (Omang)
  • Non-citizens must present a valid passport and residence permit
How long will this service take?

The service usually takes months as it encompasses the application process, followed by sorting, raffle draw and vetting of successful applicants.

Public Meetings and Processions Permit

Overview

The Permit allows the applicant to hold public meeting(s) or procession(s) within a controlled area for a specific period of time in accordance with the Public Order Act Cap. 22:02.  

Who is eligible?

Any person who wishes to convene a public meeting or to form a public procession within a controlled area

How do I get this service?
  • Applicant must write a letter of request to the Officer Commanding of the area clearly outlining the following:
  • Location of the requested area
  • Date and time of the event
  • Purpose/nature of the event
What supporting documents are required?
  • Valid Identification documents
  • Letter from the local authority (e.g Council), authorising the use of controlled area
  • In case of a procession, provide a route map
  • In case of petitions, a letter of acknowledgement from the receiving authority

Police Clearance

Overview

This service entails verification of fingerprints by the police to confirm whether one has any criminal record or not, for the purpose of employment, studies considerations etc.

Who is eligible?
  • All inhabitants of Botswana with valid reasons for clearance.
  • Foreigners who have stayed in Botswana for 6 months or more.
How do I get this service?
  • Applicants may submit their request in person, post, or courier to Criminal Record Bureau of the Botswana Police Service. Applications from abroad should include returning postage or courier.
  • No applications shall be sent by fax or email
What supporting documents are required?

CITIZEN APPLICANTS

  • A set of fingerprints obtained on a recognised fingerprint form from any Police Station nearest to the applicant (even outside Botswana).
  • Valid identification documents (minors included).
  • An application letter or any other supporting document with reasons for application.

FOREIGN APPLICANTS

  • A set of fingerprints obtained on a recognized fingerprint form from any Police Station nearest to the applicant (even outside Botswana)
  • Copy of valid passport
  • Copy of either residence or work permit issued to the applicant while residing in Botswana.
  • An application letter or any other supporting document with reasons for the application.
