Number Plate Manufacturer’s License

Overview

This service is offered to individuals or businesses who want to manufacture or supply motor vehicle number plates.

Citizens and residents.

How do I get this service?

Download and complete number plate manufacturer/ suppliers' application form. Application forms are also available at the enquiries desk at the Department of Road Transport Services across the country.
submit the document along with supporting documents at the nearest Department of Road Transport Services office.
Pay prescribed fees and you will be issued with a license accordingly.

Copy of certificate of incorporation
Copy of shareholder certificate
Copy of Trade license
Copy of identity of director(s)
Manufacturer's license (renewal)

Motor Vehicle Change of Ownership

Overview

This is transfer of ownership of vehicle to the second party.

Who is eligible?

All citizens and residents. 

How do I get this service?

Submit original registration book completed and signed by both the current and the new owner to the Registration and licensing officer.

Certifies copies of Omang of both the current and the new owner.

Pay prescribed fee determined by vehicle weight.

 

What supporting documents are required?

Applicants are required to submit the following;

Current original registration book completed and signed by both parties
Certified copies of valid identities for both current and new owners
For all organisations, registration book must be stamped and signed by an authorized personnel
In case of deceased owner:

Certified copy of death certificate
Certification letter from Kgosi, District Commissioner or a Court order indicating the legal beneficiary.
Certified copy of the beneficiary’s applicable identity

Note: If there is a dispute the beneficiary shall be determined by a competent court of law

In case of Court order

Writ of execution
Copy of Court order (addressed to the Department of road transport and safety)
Copy of notice of sale
For auctioned vehicles:

Registration book completed and signed by both the current and new owners
Proof of purchase

Vehicle Registration and Licensing

Overview

All Vehicles on Botswana roads should be registered in the Government vehicle registration system, to facilitate issuance of registration book and vehicle license disk.

Who is eligible?

Citizens and residents who own a vehicle.

How do I get this service?

Download and complete Vehicle Registration Form (RV 1) form, then attach clearance form from Botswana Police Service and BURS.
If applicant is registering a vehicle that is more than three years and above (from the year of manufacture), it must have passed a roadworthiness test. All vehicles must have customs clearance too.
Pay prescribed fee as per the vehicle weight including a levy of BWP50.00.
It is mandatory for vehicle license to be renewed annually, ideally 3 months before expiry. 
 

What supporting documents are required?

Valid applicable identity (certified copy of Omang or Passport ).
Police Clearance Certificate.
Required fee as per vehicle weight.
Customs clearance.

Note: Road worthiness test is compulsory for vehicles three years and above (from the year of manufacture).

Vehicle License Renewal

Overview

This service provides for the annual renewal of the vehicle license disk (Lekgetho)

Who is eligible?

All citizens and residents who own a vehicle. 
 

How do I get this service?

Produce original or copy of the registration book to the Licensing Officer at the nearest Department of Road Transport and Services offices or Botswana Post, Pay the prescribed fee as per the vehicle weight

What supporting documents are required?

 Omang or passport
 Copy of registration book
 

How long will this service take?

Immediate.

Visit any Department of Road Transport Services offices across the country,
Botswana Post offices. Opening hours - from 07:30 to 15:30, Monday to Friday, except public holidays.
Online payment platform *174# using Mascom and BTC network

Driving Licence Card Renewal

Overview

The driving licence is valid for a period of five (5) years. Drivers are given a provision of renewing the licence three (3) months before expiry date. Failure to renew the licence card will lead to penalties.

Who is eligible?

Botswana driving license cardholders.

How do I get this service?

Application Form (DL1)

Download and complete the DL1 – Botswana Driving License Application Form.

Alternatively, collect the form at the Enquiries Desk at any Department of Road Transport and Services (DRTS) office.

Health Declaration (DL31) – Special Cases

Required for:

Applicants 65 years or older

Applicants for Class C, C1, EC, or EC1 licences

Download and complete the DL31 Health Declaration Form or collect it at any DRTS office.

Eye Screening

Undergo an eye screening at DRTS offices or with a private doctor.

If eyesight challenges are detected:

The Registration and Licensing Officer will refer the applicant to an external eye specialist.

Only after the specialist recommends continuation can the applicant return with results and proceed.

Submission of Documents

Submit all completed forms and medical results (if applicable) to the Registration and Licensing Officer.

Payment and License Issuance

Pay the required fee at the DRTS office.

Have your photograph taken.

Receive your newly issued driving license card.

If foreigner, Certified copy of Passport 
Certified copy of Exemption certificate or Residence and Work permit
Refugee Identification Card (Refugees)

Renewal or first issue cost is P105,00 
Daily penalty fee of BWP10.00 (excluding public holidays and weekend) for renewals after the expiration date, up to a maximum of BWP1000.00.
