Overview

The driving licence is valid for a period of five (5) years. Drivers are given a provision of renewing the licence three (3) months before expiry date. Failure to renew the licence card will lead to penalties.

Who is eligible?

Botswana driving license cardholders.

How do I get this service?

Application Form (DL1)

Download and complete the DL1 – Botswana Driving License Application Form.

Alternatively, collect the form at the Enquiries Desk at any Department of Road Transport and Services (DRTS) office.

Health Declaration (DL31) – Special Cases

Required for:

Applicants 65 years or older

Applicants for Class C, C1, EC, or EC1 licences

Download and complete the DL31 Health Declaration Form or collect it at any DRTS office.

Eye Screening

Undergo an eye screening at DRTS offices or with a private doctor.

If eyesight challenges are detected:

The Registration and Licensing Officer will refer the applicant to an external eye specialist.

Only after the specialist recommends continuation can the applicant return with results and proceed.

Submission of Documents

Submit all completed forms and medical results (if applicable) to the Registration and Licensing Officer.

Payment and License Issuance

Pay the required fee at the DRTS office.

Have your photograph taken.

Receive your newly issued driving license card.

Certified copy of valid National Identify card (Omang)
If foreigner, Certified copy of Passport 
Certified copy of Exemption certificate or Residence and Work permit
Refugee Identification Card (Refugees)

Immediately

Where can I obtain this service?

Renewal or first issue cost is P105,00 
Daily penalty fee of BWP10.00 (excluding public holidays and weekend) for renewals after the expiration date, up to a maximum of BWP1000.00.

Department of Road Transport and Services Offices across the country. 

Opening hours are from 07:30 to 15:30, Monday to Friday, except public holidays.
