Botswana 's Former president Festus Mogae wins the Mo Ibrahim Prize for African Leadership

This award was conferred on Mr. Mogae for his role in ensuring "stability and prosperity" in his country. The winner of the $5-million prize -- the world's largest individual award -- was announced by former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan at London's City Hall. In accepting the award Mr. Mogae said “For my part, I hope, with the support of this award, to continue to combat the HIV and AIDS pandemic, through the Champions for an AIDS-Free Generation group, environmental degradation, in my capacity as one of the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoys on Climate Change, and corruption through my membership of the Transparency International Advisory Board”. He went on to express his gratitude as well state his position as a person, leader or country; “As an African and a Motswana, I am elated that my humble endeavours to consolidate, broaden and deepen democracy in my country, by practising transparent and accountable governance, respecting human and civil rights, the rule of law, fighting poverty and ignorance and confronting the scourge of HIV and AIDS, have been recognised by a team of illustrious and eminent personalities”.
