This Unit quantifies the performance and the work of the Department of Labour to enable different parties to make projections, interpretations, measurements, comparisons, etc. The work of the Research and Statistics Unit results in the publication of many materials including the Departmental Annual Report.
Scope
Statistical data and information from all the divisions of the Department, including that of the Botswana Foreign Mission in South Africa and abroad and the work of the Department in relation to other countries.
Functions
Labour Information Outflow
By projecting the good image of the department in relation to the labour market in Botswana, this supports the campaigns to promote foreign investment. E.g. one of the important considerations by investors is to assess whether the situation of the labour market will allow their investments to flourish or whether the restlessness of the labour will upset their ventures. Research and Statistics Unit publishes relevant information to answer these questions e.g. statistics on industrial actions, and a whole lot more to enable readers to make sound decisions.
Labour Information Recipients
The Unit acts as a channel through which information regarding the activities of the department is received, and also sent out to the public. The Unit plans and directs production of Departmental leaflets, pamphlets and posters on different labour related issues.
Labour Administration Statistics
The Unit also collects and compiles labour administration statistics from the District Labour Offices, Regional Offices and Head Quarters Units, and produces midyear and annual reports. In addition, it diagnosis labour relations problems in advance in order to provide preventive rather than curative measures.
