Why Industrial Relations
- The unit ensures good and harmonious industrial relations in the country.
- Botswana is a member of various international Organisations such as ILO, AU, SADC. The division is responsible for ensuring compliance with ILO Conventions which Botswana has ratified as well as periodically reporting to the ILO on progress of domesticating legislation to conform to ratified conventions.
Functions:
- Implementation of labour laws and policies to promote freedom of association, right to organise and collective bargaining and social dialogue.
- Provision of liaison services between government and international organisations dealing with labour matters. i.e. International Labour Organisation (ILO), Africa Union (AU) Labour and Social Affairs Commission, SADC Employment and Labour Sector (SADC ELS), African Regional Labour Administration Centre (ARLAC), etc.
- Coordination of work of the tripartite consultation forum.
- Coordination of the preparation of reports dealing with labour matters.

Dealing with Trade Unions and Employers Organizations
We do the following:
1. Maintain a list of trade unions and employers organisations
Information of registration certificate – date and certificate number
- Maintain a register of trade union membership
- Maintain report of those that are not union members
2. Maintain a register of those that have submitted annual returns/ balance sheets
- Date of reports
- Check dates of audit
- Check auditor reports
3. Maintain a register of amendments to constitution
- Updated records of constitutions by dates
4. Dates of correspondence on the above items
5. Maintain a report of Collective Agreements submitted
- Duration of agreement
- Date of adoption
6. Industrial Relations
- Request information of workplace disputes handled and status.
- Nature of disputes
- Employment law education programmes conducted
7. Presentations on various issues pertaining to labour legislation to employers, trade unions etc.
8. Attend to any correspondences outstanding.
