Press Release on First Confirmed Pandemic Influenza A (H1n1) Case In Botswana

The public is hereby informed of the first confirmed case of Pandemic Influenza A(H1N1) 2009 in Gaborone, Botswana. Laboratory confirmation was received this morning (10th July 2009).

The Ministry of Health has been working on a prevention, control and mitigation strategy ever since reports of the outbreak were reported in other parts of the world. Systems and structures are in place to monitor and address the situation. The public will be continuously updated as and when new developments unfold.

Signs and symptoms of Pandemic Influenza A(H1N1)2009 are:-

  1. Fever
  2. Sore throat
  3. Cough
  4. Stuffy nose
  5. Chills
  6. Headache and body aches
  7. Fatigue
  8. Chest pain, and
  9. Difficulty in breathing
  10. Some people may have diarrhea or experience vomitting

The public is advised to take the following precautions:

    1. Avoid contact with ill persons suspected of Influenza;
    2. Avoid hand shaking;
    3. Minimize large social gatherings;
    4. Ensure good personal and environmental hygiene at all times;
    5. When you cough or sneeze, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your sleeve (if you do not have a tissue), and throw used tissues in a trash can, to be disposed properly;
    6. Always wash your hands with soap and clean water, or use an alcohol-based hand gel;
    7. Keep contaminated surfaces clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant;
    8. All materials, such as eating utensils, towels, bed sheet used by those who are sick should not be shared without washing thoroughly, with water and soap first;
    9. Handle with care all laundries of suspected persons prior to washing, and clean your hands with soap and clean water or alcohol-based hand rub.
