  Management of Environmental Data

According to the project document and the proposal from Ramboll, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) should be assisted in building a database of environmental data. During the inception phase it became clear that several activities on environmental data are already in progress and other activities are planned.

The EPP programme  will instead facilitate co-ordination of existing activities and if possible create a common framework (or vision) for the further development of environmental data-collection and processing with special focus on environmental planning.

The initial work has included the following steps:

  • A study phase developing an overview of existing databases and projects, including an assessment of their scope and viability

  • Development of a meta-database with information about already existing databases

  • A workshop or seminar for planners in order to identify the specific needs of data for planning purposes

  • A workshop for all the primary suppliers and collectors of environmental data to secure a full overview of ongoing activities and create a common vision for future co-operation or integration of databases

  • Development of a vision for future organisation and management of environmental data in Botswana (BIMEDA).

The idea of establishing Botswana Integrated System for Environmental Data Management (BIMEDA) was the theme of a workshop in August 2000 and it is expected that the detailed work on developing standard formats, identifying common data-sets etc. will be done during the first half of 2001.

You can download the BIMEDA document (70KB).

Environmental Reporting (Green Accounting)

It is the intention to develop some simple tools to increase awareness of environmental issues in government and private institutions. This will be done through 2-3 pilot projects, where selected institutions will develop green accounts, where they can keep track of their water consumption, energy use, waste production etc – and hopefully start improving their environmental performance. This activity will be initiated in early 2001.
