QUELEA BIRDS OUTBREAK

The Ministry of Agriculture informs farmers and members of the public that there is a Quelea outbreak in some parts of Central, Kweneng, North East and Kgatleng Districts.  The Ministry has therefore, started to control the birds. Farmers and members of the public are urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious cases of Quelea to the nearest agricultural extension officers, village leadership or report to the Ministry’s Call Centre 17755.

The Quelea birds are at different stages of growth; some at brooding, hatching, nestling and juvenile stages. Control operations are carried out to protect crops which are also at different stages of development.

In another development, farmers and members of the public are urged to be vigilant as there is a possibility of a secondary infestation of the African Army worm.  Though the invasion of the worm has been controlled in most of parts of the country, its moths have been captured in Pandamatenga, Parakarungu, Mookane, Mmathethe, Goodhope and Moshupa.  The Ministry, however, continues surveillance of the worm.

Thank you.
