shortage of seeds-ISPAAD

The Ministry of Agriculture is experiencing shortage of open pollinated varieties of seeds which are provided to farmers under ISPAAD.

There is general shortage of open pollinated varieties of seeds due to amongst others poor crop harvest in the previous season by contracted seed growers.

Therefore, the Ministry informs the farming community that they are allowed to procure open pollinated varieties of seeds (Maize, Sorghum, Millet and Cowpeas) from registered dealers/private suppliers. Farmers will be reimbursed 100% for seed enough to plant up to 16 ha and 50% subsidy on seed for over 16 ha.

Farmers are advised to collect authorization letters from their Agricultural Offices/balimisi.

However, we wish to note that a tender for the procurement of seeds (cowpeas and maize) from private suppliers has been awarded and delivery is expected in the next two weeks.

The Ministry is experiencing a deficit of 1392 tonnes out of a total of 1977 tonnes. However, part of the deficit will be met through supplies by private seed suppliers.

The Ministry apologies to the general farming community about the inconvenience the shortage might have caused.
