Botswana urged to prioritize AIDS research

The chairperson of the National AIDS Council, (NAC) says Botswana should strive to become a center of excellence in the HIV and AIDS research, providing the best evidence of her programs and others globally.

In his opening remarks of the September 4 sitting, former president and chairperson of the council Festus Mogae called for the channeling of resources towards AIDS research. He said just as Botswana is known for its excellent treatment program, it needs best available evidence to improve its interventions.

The former president said as Botswana continue to adopt new strategies for preventing of new infections such as Safe Male Circumcision, there is need to remember that condoms remain the cheapest and the most effective risk reduction strategy.

He expressed concern that laxity was setting on, saying the nation should guard against complacency and defend the gains made so far, lest it finds itself where it were 10-years back.
