Press Release.

The Minister of Transport and Communications, Honourable Nonofho Molefhi leaves for Cape Town, South Africa today to witness the launch of the West Africa Cable System (WACs) at Yzerfontein, South Africa.

WACS is a 14 000 km submarine fibre-optic cable system deployed along the west coast of Africa to service the voice, data, video and internet needs of the region. The cable will connect South Africa to the United Kingdom with landings in west costal countries of Africa.

WACS is expected to land in Botswana from Namibia in May2012. It is expected that commercial traffic in the country should begin flowing across the system at the same time or shortly thereafter, with promises of further reductions on broadband prices considering the huge capacity offered by the cable.

The Minister is expected back home on the 13th May, 2012.
