Director of Roads Kabo Kote Consults with Francistown Urban Development Committee

The Director of Roads Kabo Kote today (26th April 2012) addressed the Francistown Urban Development Committee (UDC) in a consultative session on the envisaged development that will come to Botswana’s seconds city.  It is expected that in a few months time, re-construction of the 30km Tonota – Francistown road will begin, at a cost yet to be determined. The Director of Roads emphasized that these consultations are amongst others that will take place to ensure ownership of development especially where it is taking place. He says some Roads projects have failed to finish on time in the past, because

of inadequate consultations with the very people who are directly affected.

The Director further explained the scope of works that the project will entail including the ambitious plans of improving the intersection at Thapama Lodge circle to accommodate Francistown’s ever-increasing traffic especially big trucks transcending the A1 route or travelling through Botswana from the South  bounded for Northern countries like Zambia, the DRC and Mozambique.

In addition the Director told the UDC that the project will present challenges especially that part of it will be implemented within the Francistown City Centre which is a built up area. He says it is important to get the right contractor for the job to avert any past problems of projects failing to finish on time, scope and budget. The Director also told the UDC that he will ensure that he has the right technical team to implement the project as there should be no room for failure.

Other consultations that the Ministry of Transport & Communications will carry out will accommodate political and Local Government leadership, Dikgosi, transport operators and other businesses, and communities likely to be affected.

The Tonota – Francistown re-construction works will be one of the biggest projects that Government has embarked on. Its duration to completion is 36months from the time of award tender. Floating of the tender ends on the 2nd May 2012. Roads Department will announce immediately a successful bidder once the tender has been awarded.
