LOADING ON ROOF RACKS OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT VEHICLES

The Department of Road Transport and Safety under the Ministry of Transport and Communication would like to inform operators and passengers traveling to and from Zimbabwe that loading of roof racks on public transport vehicles is prohibited with effect from 01 January 2012.

Zimbabwe and Botswana Authorities had agreed on the prohibition in 2004 and 2010 respectively to increase safety on the roads. The Bilateral Agreement came into force 01 April 2011 and Operators had been given a grace period until 01 January 2012 to prepare for these changes. Operators are now advised to store passenger’s luggage in the luggage compartments of their vehicles or in trailers not exceeding the Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of 3500 kg. Transportation of luggage is limited to the passengers in the bus. Any item carried must clearly be assigned to a passenger. No luggage shall be stored in the corridor/aisles or on the seats. (Section 21 (1) – (4) of the Road Transport Permit Act and Section 23, 102 and 112 (1) – (2) of the Road Traffic Act Regulations (et al.) apply.)

Transportation of dangerous goods (fuel, gas, fertilizer etc.) is strictly forbidden!

All public transport vehicles will not be allowed to depart or enter Botswana with loaded roof racks. Stern measures will be taken against those in variance with this order.

To avoid inconvenience caused through prohibited vehicles, passengers travelling to or from Zimbabwe are advised not to board buses with loaded roof racks as from 01 January 2012!

The Department of Road Transport and Safety asks all passengers for their support and

understanding.
