Council Gives Back to Community

In a bid to promote the Vision 2016 pillar of a compassionate just and caring nation, Kgatleng District Council held a retreat workshop recently to make some donations to the residents of Kaudwane. The prestigious event was on the 2nd February 2012.

A delegation from Kgatleng District, led by the Council Chairman paid a courtesy call to the village main Kgotla where the event was held. Among those in attendance were the Village Development Committees, Village Extension Team, the Parent Teachers Association and the villagers.

The Councilors and managers present at the workshop contributed some funds and bought eight (8) footballs which were donated to Primary school, village football and netball teams respectively. This was chiefly done to help the village youth who are disadvantaged by the peripheral location (Remote Area Development Program) and thus vulnerable and susceptible to indulge in illicit practices.

This is a good move by Kgatleng District Council, especially on the backdrop of the Revised Area Development Programme of 2009 that provides broad strategies that are aimed at uplifting members of the remote area settlements, of which Kaudwane is one.

Government has through the Presidential directive CAB 39(B) 2010 directed that an affirmative action oriented plan on RADP be implemented for these settlements. These developments are a reflection of the affirmative plan by Kgatleng and were greatly celebrated by the villagers and youth teams alike.

Remote area communities continue to be the most affected by poverty in the country and are increasingly becoming dependent on welfare support from the state. This is despite various interventions and initiatives that government has devised to complement the noble objectives of the RADP and other existing national economic empowerment programmes. The idea therefore is to facilitate for remote area communities to be self-reliant and reduce their dependence on the State.

Last year Hon. Assistant Minister B. Tshireletso emphasized that the district leadership should play a significant role in ensuring that all aspects of the Affirmative Action plan, especially those affecting the Ministry, are followed and implemented vigorously. “You need to move with a sense of urgency if we are to make the desired impact on the lives of remote area communities” she said at the time.
