People go missing for different reasons

A total of 638 people were reported missing since the beginning of the year from January to 2nd October. People reported missing usually wonder away without disclosing their destinations. These incidents occur every time with no specific time of the year, month or week. Some of them are eventually found alive and in good health.

Possible causes of why people go missing include hiding from criminal prosecution, avoiding something that they are ashamed of, family or financial problems, when someone is in prison or deceased. When a report of missing person is received by the police, a search team comprising police officers and members of the public is dispatched. Where possible, air support services by the police, BDF and wildlife is engaged.

The media are also used to assist to publicize missing persons’ information that usually reveals their full description and photographs. An appeal to the public is made urging them to report missing persons to the police immediately and to assist in their search. The police also appeal to missing persons through the media to inform relatives of their whereabouts. Parents and guardians are also urged to closely monitor minors, elderly people, and people who are mentally challenged to avert their mysterious disappearance.

Once a case is opened, it is only closed when the concerned person is found alive or dead. Search teams are usually withdrawn when there is no more fresh leads, but stay on alert for possible fresh information.
