Hon. Maxwell G. K. Motowane has joined the Ministry of Local Government, replacing Hon. Kentse Rammidi. Before this move, he was Assistant Minister of Trade and Industry. He became the MP for Letlhakeng West in 2009 and was in the same year appointed the Ass. Minister of Health. He was transferred in the same position to the Ministry of Trade and Industry in 2010.

In what can be viewed as an advantage to The People’s Ministry, Motowane brings a wealth of knowledge pertaining to the newly formed Economic Diversification Drive (EDD). EDD entails the diversification of a country’s sources of economic growth and income, in such a way that the country becomes more or less equally dependant on all sectors of the economy.

The main objective of EDD is to involve the private sector’s participation in sustainable economic development and to “wean off” from government support so that they can compete openly in both domestic and global markets.

EDD is premised around the fact that the country has a huge import bill, the average for the last 5 years amounting to about P20 billion. It is for this reason that the Government of Botswana deliberately promotes the utilization of locally manufactured goods and services through procurement. This dove tails well with MLG poverty eradication strategies.

Since Districts are major spenders, they need to lead by example and embrace the EDD to ensure there is money supply in the economy. MLG proposes that the DTC Secretariat be pivotal for EDD at District level, and they should be responsible for registering companies at District level and ensuring that companies obtain EDD certificate. Each district will have a representative who should submit monthly reports to Ministry on the 13th.

Hon. Motowane has a Bsc (Hons) in Estates Management and a Diploma in Land and Property Valuation. Before he joined parliament he worked for BHC from 1983-1996 in Property Department. In 1997 he set up his own business dubbed Motowane & Associates which deals in real estates.
