Minister Masisi addresses the media on Market Day

The Minister of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration Hon. Mokgweetsi Masisi has said that 110 exhibitors are expected to showcase their products at the Market Day scheduled for Friday 1st April. Addressing a press conference yesterday, the Minister said the outputs of the backyard gardens established through Government’s Poverty Eradication initiative would be sold at the Market Day. 

His Excellency the President will officially launch the Market Day at the Gaborone Senior Secondary School grounds at 08h00. The event, which is expected to go on until 15h30, will be held under the theme, “Nyeletso lehuma, boikarabelo jame le wena” (Poverty eradication, our responsibility).

The Minister told the media that Market day is a start to showcase the success of the backyard gardens drive, and would be replicated nationally in different districts.  He said that people from various districts would be attending Market Day for benchmarking purposes.

Minister Masisi also pointed out that the backyard garden initiative includes nurseries, small stock, chickens, honey, and graphic designers to assist sellers in marketing their products. He stressed the importance of Market Day as part of Government’s Economic Diversification Drive (EDD).

Elaborating on the backyard garden, the Minister said participants are provided with technical support, and there is little use of water.  He added that this is a crucial strategy to avail opportunity to the poor who are registered to receive food basket from government.

The Market Day will be open to the public and there will be a wide variety of goods for sale including;

• Vegetables;
• Crafts (pottery, beadwork, hunting sets, woodwork, upholstery, shells); • Beekeeping and others such as atchar, yoghurt and bakery products • Nursery and veldt products (shade trees, fruit trees)

The market day offers a platform for buyers and sellers to be brought together the purpose of which would be to encourage purchase of local products.
