Zone 4a declared EU Export Zone
Declaration of Zone 4a as EU export zone

The Department of Veterinary Services wishes to inform the farming community and the general public that Zone 4a will be an European Union(EU) export zone with effect from 10th March 2011.  Zone 4a is an area between Mokobaxane and Makalamabedi veterinary disease control fences.

This dispensation follows the recognition of zone 4a in May 2010 by the World Organisation of Animal Health (OIE), as an FMD free without vaccination zone and the successful conclusion of trade negotiations with the EU and other trading partners.

A 10km-wide intensive surveillance buffer zone in 4a, along the boundary with the foot and mouth disease vaccination zone (Ngamiland and Nata districts) and the wildlife management areas will not be eligible for the EU market.  This is part of the early warning system meant to detect the disease early should it occur.

A detailed movement protocol for cloven hoofed animals and their fresh products will be communicated later.

Notwithstanding these positive developments, farmers and members of the public are urged to continue to be vigilant and take necessary precautionary measures to avoid the re-introduction of the disease in this zone.

The Ministry takes this time to thank all farmers and the general public for cooperation with officials of the Department of Veterinary Services, over the years when we worked tirelessly to attain this status.
