Police helicopters score success

Botswana Police Air Support Branch has been scoring successes in the fight against crime since inception in 2009. Batswana have the reason to celebrate as air transport provides the expected benefits to offer the needed comfort to the public and the business community that for long have been reeling under the spectre of crime.

Since the arrival of the first two Police helicopters in January 2009 and the third that came in August the same year, the three helicopters have been providing significant contribution. Their use since January 2009 to September 2010, resulted in the arrest of eight (8) suspects in the six (6) crime incidents linked to burglaries, theft of motor vehicle and robbery.

A number of other suspects connected to robberies, murder and illegal mining were also netted through air support and cash amounting to thousands of Dollars, Rands and Pulas were recovered. Sterling performance by Botswana Police helicopters attracted other departments, for example, during the escape of some prisoners, the BPS helicopter was able to locate the vehicle used by prison escapees.

Police helicopters perform traffic control, ground support, search and rescue, high-speed car pursuits, observation, air patrol and riot control. They also transport Special Weapon and Tactics (SWAT) personnel, an elite paramilitary tactical section that may be called to perform high risk operations. These aircrafts are equipped with variants such as infrared, surveillance cameras, radar, loudspeaker systems, tear gas dispensers, search lights, flashing light beacons, police rescue equipment and special seating. They have proven track record in police missions, especially in hot and high conditions.
