Reduction of crime attributed to clusters

The reduction of incidence of violent and intrusive crime in Serowe and its periphery is attributed to the active involvement of the residents in crime prevention initiatives.

Speaking at the crime prevention workshop organized by the Serowe police and local cluster committees held under the theme “Building Effective Partnerships Through Community Policing Clusters, the Divisional

Commander South Central, Senior Assistant Commissioner Keabetswe Makgophe revealed that Serowe registered 799 cases of house break-ins and store break-ins in 2008. These cases however, decreased to 465 in 2009.

He said armed robberies went down during the same period, attributing the decline in 2009 to the active involvement of clusters.

The Member of Parliament for Serowe North East Mr Dikgakgamatso Seretse who is praised for pioneering the Cluster Policing initiative said the initiative was introduced to strengthen crime prevention strategies by enhancing partnerships between the law enforcement agencies and the public to be able to fight crime.

He commended residents for their active involvement in cluster activities, saying their effort was bearing fruit as shown by the decline of crime in the village. He said the fact that their clusters scooped first prize at the last Cluster Awards held at the Botswana Police College demonstrates their commitment.

He condemned allegations that cluster members were only those who get elected into committees, saying that was not true. He said everyone who joins the cluster committee is a member, saying committees are formed for to provide guidance and  proper admonition of cluster activities.

Music entertainment at the workshop was provided by the local music artists, among them, Alfredo Mos & Les Africa Sounds and Mmereki Marakakgoro
