Role of the office of the crime prevention

§  In keeping with the requirements of the international practices, the Botswana Police Service designated a focal agency to direct, manage and coordinate crime prevention efforts.

§  A central office, the National Coordinator and dedicated personnel have been identified under the Criminal Investigations Department Branch.

§  Crime prevention officers at local level (Districts and Stations) have been identified and are accountable to the National Coordination Office.

 

Mandate of the office

§  Develops and supports effective community policing initiatives.

¨       Coordinates community policing activities in the country

¨       Develops, coordinates and monitors programs at national level.

¨       Provides policy advice about crime reduction initiatives by facilitating partnerships between the police and other partners.

§  Provides evidence based advice about what works in crime prevention.

¨       By evaluating the success or failures of crime prevention programs.

¨       Crime analysis to guide strategies.

§  Support community partnerships.

¨       By coordinating other departments, police and community crime prevention partnerships.

¨       By stimulating and sustaining community involvement in crime prevention.

§  To budget for community policing.

         ¨       Finances programs at stations and districts.

¨       Finances the production of awareness material.

§  Undertake research on prevalent crime.

               ¨       Analyses crime statistics and initiate research on the worrisome crime

§  Production of awareness material.

¨       Produces booklets for distribution to the general public

¨       Produces Radio, Television and Newspaper adverts to sensitize the community about crime trends.

§  To maintain records of community policing activities throughout the country

¨       Number of programs conducted such as Domestic Violence, Youth Anti Drugs etc

¨       Number of neighborhood watch schemes, business watch and others formed.

§  Training of members of the Service on community policing.

¨       Capacity building Coordinators.

¨       Other members of the service.

¨       Committee members.
