Traditional Recipe Book 1

TRADITIONAL FOOD RECIPES AND NUTRITIONAL ANALYSIS

INTRODUCTION

This booklet presents indigenous foods and recipes to promote their use in everyday cookery and to encourage development efforts to enhance their taste and appearance.  Home Economics Officers from Urban and District Councils collected the ingredients from different regions and districts all over Botswana. The ingredients were then prepared either in their traditional ways or with an enhanced touch for taste and appearance. The use of indigenous foods is slowly diminishing, since their nutritional value is not known and more foodstuff are being introduced whose nutritive value is depicted on the labels. Botswana has an abundance of highly nutritious foods, which need to be enhanced and promoted to benefit many communities while at the same time saving their money.

The production of the booklet is expected to contribute to a change in eating habits among Batswana by providing the analyzed nutritional content of indigenous foods, therefore making it easier for people to know what they are ingesting.

More of these foods will be analyzed in future in order to provide people with adequate knowledge on the available foods and their nutritive value. This booklet will be referred to as Book 1 on Traditional Food Recipes and Nutritional Analysis.

BOTSWANA TRADITIONAL FOOD RECIPES AND NUTRITIONAL ANALYSIS (2008 EDITION)

                                INTRODUCTION

The Ministry of Local Government Home Economists, whose mandate is to provide nutrition, education to families and individuals, has continued with the task of nutritional analysis on traditional foods collected from all districts of Botswana as a measure of recording their nutritive value.

Botswana Indigenous Food Recipes and Nutritional Analysis - 2008 is the second in a series produced by the Home Economics Division within the Department of Social Services.

This book seeks to sensitize the reader on the use and preparation of Botswana indigenous foods in every day lives. It encourages people to appreciate Botswana indigenous foods through a variety of recipes which enhance the appearance and taste.

Indigenous foods are nutritionally superior as they are high in vitamins, minerals, as well as other essential nutrients. One good thing to remember about this type of food is that, it has not been modified through bio-technology. Therefore one has the comfort of knowing that they are eating natural foods. Thirty-eight different foods were analyzed in this instance. Further research on other foods not covered in the first and second editions will be carried in the future.

We trust the reader will find this book informative as well as satisfying.
