The Role of State Media

Housed at the Mass Media Complex in Gaborone, the main function of the Department of Broadcasting Services is to provide news, information and entertainment. (DBS) comprises Radio Botswana (RB) and Botswana Television (Btv).

Radio Botswana started operating in 1965, and was known as Radio Bechuanaland. It was renamed Radio Botswana in September 30, 1966. And, in 1992, a commercial channel (RB2) was introduced. This channel 1992 targeting the business community and the youth.  

A national television service, Botswana Television (BTV), was launched on July 31, 2000.

DBS continues to build an extensive terrestrial transmitter network in the country to expand and improve Radio and Television reception. Since 2002, both radio and television are available by satellite.
