His Excellency the President of the Republic of Botswana, Lieutenant General Ian Khama Seretse Khama has nominated Dr. Gloria Somolokae as Botswana’s candidate for the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the period 2016-2019.

H.E NOMINATES BOTSWANA’S CANDIDATURE TO THE EXECUTIVE BOARD OF UNESCO

 

His Excellency the President of the Republic of Botswana, Lieutenant General Ian Khama Seretse Khama has nominated Dr. Gloria Somolokae as Botswana’s candidate for the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the period 2016-2019.

The Executive Board is one of the three Constitutional Organs of UNESCO and is elected by the General Conference. It consists of 58 member states and members serve for a four year term of office.

The mandate of the Executive Board is to:

• Prepare the agenda of the General Conference

• Examine UNESCO Program and budget estimates that is submitted by the Director General for consideration

• It is responsible for the execution of the programs adopted by the General Conference

• Summon extraordinary session of the General Conference.

Dr. Somolokae holds a PHD in Public Administration and a Masters in Public Policy and Administration. As a former cabinet Minister, she has strong knowledge and experience in governance matters, democracy and electoral management, policy analysis and rural development programming. A competent researcher, who has done extensive work in consultancy for Botswana’s Education Hub and as a lecturer at the University of Botswana for more than seven years, has been involved in advocacy initiatives and board member on a number of initiatives both locally, regionally and internationally.

The name of the nominee will be submitted at Botswana’s Embassy in Brussels and mobilization for her campaign will commence. The nomination will take place during the 38th Session of UNESCO General Conference to be held in November 2015 at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris.
