MINISTRY OF DEFENCE, JUSTICE AND SECURITY CONTINUES TO MAKE VISIBLE FOOTPRINTS BY EXTENDING A HAND TO THE UNPRIVILEDGED IN OUR COMMUNITIES

Corporate Social Responsibility as the continuing commitment by organisations to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as of the local community and society at large, the Ministry of Defence, Justice and Security not being an exception follow suits and leaves a commendable and significant mark .

  25th April 2014, The Ministry of Defence, Justice and Security undertook a Community Service project in Kgomodiatshaba village in Kgatleng District. The Ministry delegation led by the Secretary of Defence, Justice and Security Mr Augustine Makgonatsotlhe accompanied by the Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary – Corporate Services Ms Boikhutso Botlhole  and members of staff were joined by the delegation from Kgatleng which comprised of ;the District Commissioner’s representative Mr. Mogomotsi  Ramodisa and  the Council Secretary representative  Mr Pascal Madisa.

Following consultations with the Social and Community Development in the Kgatleng District Council, the family of Ms Lesang Thibogang was identified as needy. This is a family of twelve (12) individuals who live in a tent which was provided by the Disaster Management Office from the Office of the President. The family also comprises of three (3) orphans.

While giving welcome remarks, Kgosi Peter Kgakole said that he was happy to see Government departments taking part in voluntary work, showing compassion to the less privileged saying this is the second time it takes place in his village. He emphasised that he wished the committees in the village such as Village Development Committees, Village Extension Team (VET) which mostly comprises of the civil servants could follow suit and do the same to another unprivileged family, adding that, it is a good spirit that should be encouraged among the villagers.

For his part, the leader of the delegation who is also Secretary of Defence, Justice and Security Mr Augustine Makgonatsotlhe said that it is His Excellency, the President Seretse Khama Ian Khama’s initiative that certain dates in the public service calendar have been set aside to undertake Community Service projects and it on this manner that his Ministry deemed it fit to go and spend a day in Kgomodiatshaba but not only to visit but to interact and impact in the lives of the villagers in one way or another, thereby building a strong relationship with the villagers. This initiative called on Ministries, parastatal organisations and the private sector to extend a helping hand to those in needs in our communities. He however said that looking at the situation as it was at Ms Thibogang’ s house ,a helping hand should be extended far beyond what was done on that day put to endeavour to provide habitable shelter for the family. He said;

We believe our assistance to the family will go a long way in promoting the 2016 Vision pillar of Compassionate and caring nation.

As the Ministry staff arrived at the identified yard they joined hands with members of different committees   in cleaning the yard both in and out. An official hand over of the goodies which consisted of groceries for the family, new clothes for the young and old at the tune of P881.18, blankets at the tune of P480.00 were handed to Ms Thibogang on behalf of the Minister Hon. Dikgakgamatso Ndelu Seretse and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry Ms Segakweng Tsiane to sustain the family during the winter season. Members of staff donated food packages and toiletry while some contributed some funds which enabled the organising committee to buy blankets and the some of P598, 90 as contributions from staff members topped the groceries.
