RESPONSE TO A QUSTIONAIRE FROM PATRIOT ON SUNDAY
The Ministry of Defence, Justice and Security is aware of the request made by BONELA to access the prisons facility and did not agree to such a visit.
Firstly, BONELA was supposed to make a formal request to Botswana Prison Service stating clearly the purpose of the visit and the persons to undertake the visit. This would enable the Commissioner of Prisons to assess the request and determine if it conforms to the provisions of the law regarding visiting inmates
The Ministry of Defence, Justice and Security is not aware of any lawsuit over the provision of ARVs to foreign inmates and has not been served with any lawsuit to that effect. Further, this Ministry is not aware of any impending lawsuit.
The Government policy is clear on this matter; Government does not provide ARVs to foreign inmates in Prisons.
Thank you
