‘OPEN DIALOGUE BOLSTERS DEMOCRACY’

Government is committed to ensuring that different stakeholders in society participate in the open dialogue in order to strengthen accountable governance and bolster the country’s democratic system.

This was said by Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration Mr Nonofo Molefhi when welcoming guests to the Democracy Symposium reception held at the University of Botswana in Gaborone on September 25.

Mr Molefhi said the symposium, held under the theme: Democracy as a Vehicle to a Capable State, was a means of promoting dialogue between various interest groups within society in order to strengthen consultation and enable the flourishing of free speech.

In his brief speech, Mr Molefhi said government would continue promoting vibrant debate that was critical to a strong and robust democracy.

He thanked the different participants including former Liberian president Professor Amos Sawyer, politicians including current and former Members of Parliament, representatives of political parties, civil society as well as domestic scholars and international experts.

Earlier, Acting President, Slumber Tsogwane had opened the symposium by also outlining government’s commitment to transparent government, accountability, human rights, the rule of law and efforts being made to strengthen the country's democratic traditions. BOPA
