2011 form five results out
The 2011 Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) results are out. According to a Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) press statement, a total of 28 702 candidates sat for the examinations compared to 29 363 in 2010.
The statement says that out of the number, 21 240 were from government and government-aided schools compared to 21 250 in 2010 while 1 868 were from private schools compared to 2 361 in 2010.
There were 5 594 private candidates compared to 5 752 in 2010. The release says looking at the overall performance, there is a steady decline since 2007 as the number of grades that were C or better issued to all candidates for all syllabuses show a drop of 1.86 per cent while the number of grades that were A or better issued to all candidates for all syllabuses show a drop of 0.24 per cent.
The performance at school level shows that out of 28 of the government and government-aided schools, 16 have recorded a decline in performance at grades C or better, five show an increase and seven have maintained the same performance as in 2010.
There are 251 candidates whose results are withheld pending investigation of suspected irregularity. The investigation will be concluded within the six week period provided for queries following the publication of results. It also reveals that candidates who sat the Geography paper one that had a missing "map" have been graded through procedures that have ensured that they are not disadvantaged. The results can be accessed from the BEC website (www.bec.co.bw)
