H.E. the President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama has appealed to residents of Ngamiland to complement government efforts in the fight against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD). Addressing the residents of New Disaneng ward in Maun last week (photo), President Khama said it was unfortunate that some farmers failed to comply with the FMD vaccination procedures. He said government had successfully fought various diseases in the past such as cattle lung disease and Malaria, but that with regard to the FMD, it seemed like a different case as government continued to spend millions of Pula fighting it. “The government cannot win this battle alone,” President Khama said, adding that the recent FMD outbreak in Kareng in which only six cattle were vaccinated out of the 188 investigated cattle proved his point. That alone was a clear sign of the cause of the outbreak, he explained, adding that cooperation from farmers was vital if the battle was to be won. President Khama pointed out that continuous FMD outbreaks would have a negative impact on efforts made by the Ministry of Agriculture to secure a market for the cattle in the area.
