The Ministry of Nationality, Immigration and Gender Affairs which is abbreviated as (MNIG) is one of the Ministries which were established on 1st October 2016 following the reorganization of government portfolio responsibilities. MNIG comprises of four departments namely;

  • Corporate Services,
  • Immigration and Citizenship,
  • Civil and National Registration
  • Gender Affairs

The Ministry is mandated to safeguard national identity, facilitate movement across borders, regulate work and residence permits, register societies and coordinate gender mainstreaming, by promoting gender equality.

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship which is responsible for migration and security services delivers its    functions through four(4) divisions which are; Migration and Visa, Passport, Citizenship and Investigation and Repatriation.

The Department of Civil and National Registration is mandated to undertake civil registration services. It provides Batswana with documentation needed to establish legal identity and family relationships, and by extension, to exercise their civil rights, and access services. The department delivers its functions through the following divisions; Societies, Births and Deaths, Change of name, Marriages and Civil Registration.

Gender Affairs Department is responsible for the promotion of gender equality and empowerment of women. The department has strategies in place to assist low income women to undertake income generating projects thus, creating employment for them and others.

Corporate Services is mandated to facilitate the Ministry in delivering its portfolio by providing support services in resource management, facilities management, information technology, communications and anti-corruption services.
