The Speaker of the National Assembly, Honourable Dr Margaret N. Nasha left for an official trip to Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago  to attend the 21st Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) from the 7th – 12th January 2012.

The aim of the Conference is to facilitate dialogue and collaboration amongst Speakers of the Commonwealth Parliaments and to promote knowledge and understanding of parliamentary democracy in its various forms and also develop parliamentary institutions.

The Conference is autonomous of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the Commonwealth Heads of Government. The conference is held biannually, hosted by any of the 54 member Parliaments.

The following are topics which will be discussed at the conference:

1. Executive accountability: Oversight Role of Parliament.
2. Parliamentary Service and its Management: Strengthening the Independence of Parliament.
3. Emerging new challenges for Speakers: Multiparty Chamber minority or coalition government.
4. Role of Parliamentary Diplomacy in the era of Globalisation.

Hon. Nasha will be accompanied by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Ms Barbara Dithapo. The delegation will arrive back in Gaborone on 14th January 2012.
