Commemorations of the Commonwealth Day
Commemorations of the Commonwealth Day

Botswana and other Commonwealth countries will commemorate the Commonwealth Day on Monday 12th March 2012 under the theme “Connecting Cultures”. The aim of commemorating Commonwealth Day is to promote understanding on global issues, international co-operation and the work of the Commonwealth to improve the lives of its 2 billion citizens.

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) is the Parliamentary wing of the Commonwealth. Its mission is to promote the advancement of parliamentary democracy by:

• Enhancing knowledge and understanding of democratic governance;
• Building an informed parliamentary community able to deepen the Commonwealth’s democratic commitment; and
• Furthering cooperation among its Parliaments and Legislatures.

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association pursues its objectives by organizing or sponsoring a number of conferences, seminars, workshops, study groups and other events for Parliamentarians.

The CPA Botswana Branch will this year commemorate the day by visiting schools as a way of taking the CPA to the people. The Committee has identified eight (8) schools in and around Gaborone for this exercise. At least eight Members of Parliament are expected to attend and participate at the Commonwealth Day activities.
