Office of the President (OP)
The death of Col. Muammar Gaddafi

Gaborone, October 21, 2011: The Government of the Republic of Botswana has noted reports of the death of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.  Colonel Gaddafi had committed crimes against humanity and other serious violations of fundamental human rights with the intention to suppress the popular uprising by the Libyan people, who for a long time yearned for democratic transformation.  Colonel Gaddafi’s demise therefore, marks an end of over forty years of tyranny.

The Government of the Republic of Botswana reaffirms its support for peace, stability and democratic dispensation in Libya, as these are the necessary foundation for sustainable development.

We therefore call upon the international community to unequivocally support the Libyan people as they go through the difficult path of reconstruction and reconciliation.
