President Khama Share South-South Cooperation award
29/09/11

H.E. the President Lt. General Seretse Khama Ian Khama is the co-recipient of this year’s South-South Award in the Category of South-South Cooperation.

President Khama shares the award with the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, H.E. Dilma Vana Rousseff.

The two were jointly honoured in recognition of the joint efforts being made by the Governments of Botswana and Brazil in the area of mobilizing ICT for health, with specific reference to collaboration in using ICT to combat the HIV/AIDS pandemic, which is described as a benchmark for other South-South collaboration. In this respect Brazilian experts have collaborated with Batswana in the development of electronic curriculum materials on HIV/AIDS prevention.

The awards are given under the auspices of the United Nations  Unit for South-South Cooperation, which was established in 1978 to promote South-South Trade and Collaboration within UN agencies.

The awards are intended to recognize progress and celebrate success in furthering South-South Cooperation and the strategic use of technology and innovation.

This year’s awards were bestowed at a gala ceremony held in New York City last week.  In this respect The President’s award was collected on his behalf by the Minister of Health, the Rev. Dr. John Seakgosing.
