The 2008 Botswana AIDS Impact Survey III (BAIS III) data yielded a national HIV prevalence rate of 17.6 percent while the rate of new infections (incidence) estimated was 2.9 percent. By gender the prevalence among females was 20.4 percent while males had 14.2 percent. The rate of new infections was higher among females than males at an estimated at 3.5 and 2.3 percent respectively.
