One count of corruption in respect of official transaction
A 43 year old man appeared before Village Magistrate Court charged with one count of corruption in respect of official transaction contrary to section 25 (1) as read with section 36 of the Corruption and Economic Crime Act Cap 08:05 Laws of Botswana.
DCEC Investigations
Investigations conducted by the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) revealed that the accused person Edward Tekane on or about the 24th March 2005 at Gaborone West in the Administrative District of the Republic of Botswana being a Public Officer as an Assistant Bye Law Enforcement Officer at Gaborone City Council accepted a P500 bribe from Samantha Van Der Watt for him to speed up the process of issuing Tenacity (Pty) Ltd Trading with a business license as Corporate Identity for a company registered in Botswana.
Charges and Sentencing
The accused person was sentenced to one year imprisonment, wholly suspended for two years, and a fine of P5000 to be paid before the 30th April 2012 being the next mention in court to monitor if the accused person has paid the fine. Ms Susan Mangori appeared for the state while Tekane was represented by Mr Shakes Busang of Busang Sebonego and Company.
