A Gaborone based dental surgeon, Dr Nomsa Mbere has commended the Botswana Police for introducing wellness programmes as a way of maintaining a healthy lifestyle amongst its employees.

Speaking at a wellness day organised by the Botswana Police Transport and Telecommunications Branch in Gaborone today (04/06/2010), Dr Mbere said an outstanding performance of an organisation is dependant on the workforce that is healthy and productive. She called on police officers to continue with the programme saying the nature of their duty requires a physically and mentally fit workforce.

Dr Mbere also encouraged police officers to employ possible means of managing stress when on or off duty because they are confronted with different challenges in their day to day duties. She said stress can affect their work if not properly managed.

Earlier on in his welcome remarks, the Director of Botswana Police Transport and Telecommunications Senior Assistant Commissioner Leabaneng Rankeke said the wellness programme was initiated by the Botswana Police for the purpose of maintaining physical fitness and good health in the workplace. He said regular physical training, healthy eating and screening for life threatening diseases would enable them to maintain a healthy life.

The programme was held under the theme ‘INVESTING IN EMPLOYEES WELL BEING; AN INVESTMENT FOR THE FUTURE.’
