Safety tips for the business community

There are various crimes that affect businesses such as theft, robbery, break-ins and fraud. Members of the business community are encouraged to do the following to protect their businesses:

·         Deposit business money at banks

·         Avoid keeping business money at  residential areas

·         It is advisable to have devices (fraud detectors) to check if the money (bank notes) presented are genuine

·         Vet potential employees

·         Install security devices(e.g., alarms and Circular Circuit Televisions) in the business

·         Hire security guards to take care of the business

·         Verify the ownership of the debit card (or any card) before using it for payment. The buyer may be asked for additional documents such as National Identity Card.

·         Report suspicious people at the business premise to the police (emergency number:999)

·         Engage security companies when transporting cash to the bank or any place

·         Decide whether to accept cheques or not. If accepted, provide conditions that will make it difficult for criminals to cheat businesses using false cheques

·         Form or join business community policing committee that prevents crime in the business setting
