The Managing Director of the International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) Senior Assistant Commissioner Mr Kelebamang Motlhanka, has said intelligence gathering is essential in every police organization.

Officially closing two (2) weeks Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organization (SARPCCO) Crime Intelligence Gathering Trainers Course at the Botswana Police College this morning (19/08/11), Mr Motlhanka said the successful investigation of crime requires the collection and effective utilization of intelligence, saying the course was organized to enhance the application of knowledge, skill and techniques for police intelligence gatherers.

He said collection of information, dissemination and utilization of intelligence at all levels, is imperative to counter the activities of organized criminal syndicates and added that criminals including international terrorists, drug traffickers, human traffickers and old-fashioned smugglers threaten political and economic prosperity throughout the African continent, and too often are able to move and act undetected by law enforcement organizations.

He said bringing these criminals to justice requires concerted and regionally coordinated efforts throughout Africa saying the course could contribute to professional law enforcement, especially in the area of intelligence gathering.

In conclusion, Mr Motlhanka said the course has brought participants together to foster relationships that will assist in the development of professional cooperation. He however urged them to pass the knowledge, skills and attributes they have acquired to their fellow officers back home.

The course was attended by 18 participants from Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Democratic Republic of Congo.
