The Director of Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Senior Assistant Commissioner Wilmon Karihindi retires from active policing.
Mr Karihindi retired on 31st December 2011, after serving in the Botswana Police Service for the past 40 years. He joined the Botswana Police Force on 10th August 1971.
He was posted to Police Mobile Unit after completing his recruit training and later transferred to Urban Police in 1976. A year later he was transferred into CID and transferred to Francistown as an investigator.
Between August 1994 and August 1995 he was attached to a newly formed Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime as an investigator after which he was appointed Divisional Criminal Investigation Officer for the southern Division in 1995.
Mr Karihindi was transferred back to General Duties (uniformed) as Deputy Divisional Commander in 1999 and in 2005 he was taken back to CID and appointed its Director.
His dedication and commitment to duty earned him several promotions from as early as 1976 when he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant up until the rank of Senior Assistant Commissioner that he retired still holding.
In recognition of his commitment to work, he was awarded Botswana Police Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1990, Botswana Police Jubilee Service Medal in 1997, Botswana Police Distinguished Service Order Medal in 2002 and Botswana Police Meritorious Service Medal in 2008.
At a dinner organised to bid him farewell in Gaborone recently the Commissioner of Police Mr Thebeyame Tsimako said Mr Karihindi was a dedicated and hard working officer. He said during Mr Karihindi’s tenure as the irector of CID, he was a member of many committees under the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (SARPCCO) where they developed strategies to deal with cross border crime.
The Commissioner said under the able leadership of Mr Karihindi, Botswana managed to host Interpol International Conference and several successful joint operations with neighbouring countries.
For his part Mr Wilmon Karihindi said he was very much appreciative to the support and encouragement that was given by his former colleagues. He said it was an honour for him to have been given the post as the Director the CID as it showed that the service had trust in him of doing the job diligently.
He however encouraged those remaining to work very hard in fighting crime and making the country a safe place to live in.
