Police recorded a total of 40 robbery incidents during the past week (8-15/5/11) of which 38 of them involved the use of assorted weapons. Robbery incidents have been increasing for the past three months.
Since the beginning of the year the police recorded a total of 832 robbery incidents of which 605 involved the use of weapons mainly knives.
Police investigations indicated that most of the victims were attacked whilst walking to and from their homes, some whilst waiting at bus stops or walking in dark or bush passageways. Valuables that were stolen from victims included cell phones, money and clothing. Furthermore the robbery incidents were more frequent during the night especially on weekends.
The public is urged to ensure their safety and that of their property by taking preventative measures that would not expose them to robberies. Reducing unnecessary movements during the night and avoiding dark and or bushy areas, could chances of people falling victims to street robberies.
