Botswana Police Service advises people applying for public meetings and processions’ permit to submit their applications a week before the actual date of the meeting or procession to enable permits issuers to make arrangements with other relevant stakeholders.
Applicants are however asked to include in their applications, a written letter, the date, place, and time at which the public meeting or public procession is authorized and to specify the speaker and permit holder.
Public meetings and processions permit is issued in writing by a police officer of the rank of Assistant Superintendent. The permit allows the applicant to hold public meetings at the place within the time limits subject to the conditions specified for the purpose of the Public Order Act Cap. 22:02.
Members of the public are therefore advised to always comply with conditions stated in a permit. Any person who knowingly opposes or violates any conditions of a permit issued under section 4(3) of the Public Order Act shall be guilty of an offence and liable to a fine not exceeding P100 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or to both.
