Botswana Police is concerned about the increasing number of people who lose their lives due to road accidents. During the previous week at least 12 people lost their lives, 21 suffered serious injuries and 41 escaped with minor injuries. During the preceding week the police recorded 10 road accident fatalities in which 20 people were seriously injured. Four of the victims were passengers. Other victims were four drivers and three pedestrians.
So far a total of 261 people have died in road accident since the beginning of the year, compared to 208 who died last year the same period. The police recorded a total of 302 road accident throughout the country last week.
In one notable incident a month old baby died after a motor vehicle she was a passenger in over turned near Mahalapye on Friday. Police investigations are continuing to determine the cause of the accident. Preliminary police investigations indicate that most of the accidents were a result of drivers’ fault. The police would like to appeal to motorists to be responsible and cautious when driving to avoid unnecessary accidents.
On other offences, the police recorded four murder cases which resulted in the arrest of two suspects. A total number of 34 armed robberies were also recorded in which two suspects were arrested for two cases and cash amounting to over P100, 000 recovered. The police further arrested eight (8) suspects for the 14 rape cases recorded during the past week.
