Break-ins in residential places increases
06/05/11

Crime statistics indicate that incidents of breaking into residential places have increased for the past three months.

During the week under the review, the police recorded 165 incidents in which residential houses were broken into and 83 of them took place during the night.

The police recorded a total of 313 house breaking and theft cases (breaking during the day) in February this year while 331 and 367 were recorded in March and April respectively. As for burglary and theft (breaking during the night) there were 273 and 324 cases recorded during the months of February and March respectively while in April the cases increased to 384.

Since the beginning of the year to date, a total of 1459 house breaking and theft cases were recorded and 1349 burglary and theft cases were recorded during the same period.

In most cases residential houses were broken into while their owners were away. The police also noted that security was deficient in some of the houses targeted by criminals.

The public is encouraged to form cluster committees in their respective localities. They should inform their neighbours to watch their houses when going out. The public is further encouraged to install security devices in their homes to deter would be criminals.
